Starving Soul Sermon 11-04-07

I am not stretching a point when I say that many people today have Souls that are Starving. They can not get their questions answered because many of the people they seek out for guidance also have Starving Souls. Many Spiritual Leaders today refuse to part with what they do know about the Meaning of our lives. Some repeat Dogma of whatever branch of the tree they Worship in. Some just make up formulas like cake recipes. Combining and recombining ingredients hoping that this one will turn out to feed Souls. A lot of them make money by dispensing these recipes.

The only recipe worth attempting to cook is through the Teachings of Jesus. All others are missing key ingredients. Jesus’ recipe feeds the complete needs of the Soul. Think of it as a Complete Food; no added ingredient is needed.

Some other recipes sound great. A few are like junk foods, all empty calories. You can not live on cake alone. Some are fairly balanced, giving the illusion of feeding the whole Soul. These remind me of a story my Grandma told me. It was about incomplete food.

In the story Grandma told me about the Settlers who came into the tribe’s land. The US Government said this is free land if you farm it. It did not matter that there were already people living there. The overcrowded and filthy conditions on the East Coast were so bad that many options seemed appealing.

In an attempt to lay solid claim to the land the US claimed they wanted settlers on it. Since the possibilities of owning any property let alone Land was beyond the reach of most citizens of the US; free land seemed like a once in a lifetime opportunity. I have family on both ends of this debate of whether it was right or wrong. It just was.

There was a sense of invincibility in the many naïve settlers. Many had never worked on a farm. Some had never held a rifle, let alone fire one. If they had it was not at a moving target. Most were so ill prepared they did not stand a chance.

The settlers sometimes ran low on food very early in their travel. They started supplementing their supplies with jack rabbit. It provided needed calories and protein. They fried it in oil they had packed in with them. A person burns 2 to three times normal calories when struggling with a heavy wagon over uneven ground or a rutted trail. All went well until they ran out of oil.

They continued to eat the jack rabbit. If they had no flour, seed corn, or other food to provide them with the starches they needed to have a balance of calorie sources it was a big problem. The diet was a deadly one for many. You see there is a problem with jack rabbit. The meat is very lean. There is virtually no fat at all on them. If you ate the skin too uncooked you would get a bit, but not much. That is why predators can eat some percentage of jack rabbit and be unharmed. People generally do not eat rabbits with the fur on. Skinning the rabbit removes the fur but also the only fat on the rabbit.

Something dangerous happens to people put on an all protein diet. It is called Ketosis. That is using protein instead of the preferred carbohydrates or sugar as the bodies fuel. If the body can not find sugar to burn it will start burning fat. This is the first stage of Ketosis. The only people of the World who can maintain health for long periods of time on an extreme protein diet are the Inuit. Outsiders call them Eskimos. Even with this high tolerance they must consume vast amounts of fat to serve as the body’s fuel.

When there is neither sugar or fat available the body starts burning protein. This is the last stage of Ketosis. If it is temporary it can be healed. If it is your only fuel you literally die of starvation. It is an incomplete food. This kind of starvation is called Rabbit Fever.

Grandma said that some settlers were befriended. These people were shown how to get what they needed to survive. Roots that had starch, and fat meat sources for the fat.

The Spiritual recipes that hunt around for the perfect remixing of ideas fall into the incomplete food category.

The other category of Spiritual Leaders was warned about by Jesus. It was happening in the Jewish faith during Jesus’ lifetime. Jesus describes these Leaders in two different ways.

The first is that they know how to be faithful to God. The problem is they are not interested in doing what is needed. To top it off they know but refuse to share the knowledge. Here is a verse illustrating this warning Jesus gave about them.

RGoT Verse 39 Jesus said, “The Priests and the bureaucrats have stolen the keys for accessing Knowledge and hidden them. They refuse to enter. They have also blocked those seeking to enter. You must be as wise as Serpents and as innocent as doves.”

RGoT Verse 102 Jesus said, “Beware Pharisees, for they are like snapping cur dogs sleeping in an oxen’s box. They neither eat the hay nor do they let the oxen have their feed.”

Jesus also speaks of the hungry Soul in us all. Here is a verse that speaks of this.

RGoT Verse 38 Jesus said,” Many times in the past you have hungered to hear what I am saying to you now. You have no one else to hear it from. There will be times when you seek me and you will not find me. Keep seeking, you will find me again.”

Jesus knew how hard it would be at times to endure the difficult times in our lives. The last verse cautions that you may not feel satisfied in your hunger for the words he shared with us at all times. However like any good teacher or professor if you seek guidance you will find it. The key is not to give up in times of duress. You will find him in your life again and be filled.

Unfortunately when your food from God seems out of reach people despair. It is in these times some people start hunting for a new recipe. What they will find is lacking something. Either it is Spiritual Junk Food or it is akin to the ungarnished diet of strictly Jack Rabbit. Both ways lead to the Spiritual equivalent of Malnutrition at best. At worst it leads you down the road to Spiritual Death.

In times of hardship you may feel that it is your faith in God and Jesus’ teachings that have failed. Maybe a way to think about being filled and your hunger satisfied as the norm. Then like any fast regarding food for your Soul, think of it as a means to better appreciate the value of your Soul’s nourishment returning to your life.

The Food from God through Jesus is waiting. Seek it until you find it. Use the fasts in your life to heighten your appreciation of God’s gifts when they fill your table once more. The Table is set, and all are invited. Come feed your Starving Soul. I’ll sit next to you.

God Bless the Whole World, No Exceptions.

Thirsty Heart Sermon 11-11-07

Jesus grew up in a part of the World where water was not only scarce, but at a premium. Water was Life. We are often spoiled in this era of modern plumbing. We turn a spigot and out flows copious amounts of not just safe water, but most often, crystal clear water.

We let it run while we walk around the bathroom. We let it run while we go find the next vegetable to wash off for dinner. We shower for long periods just for the shear joy of it. It is understandable that something that seems so effortless should be taken for granted.

Our perception of water rationing; if you live in an area with lower rainfall; is often an argument about which day you get to water your yard. We cringe when our lawns grow brown during the Summer. Our flowers get a bit wilty. We get all bent out of shape if we can not wash our car every weekend.

In Jesus’ World every drop was precious. Bathing was a ritual. It took on Spiritual Weight to be able to get wet all over your body. Full immersion was saved for strictly Ritual purification. They probably thought the Romans with their frequent baths were decadent hedonists, and many were.

Desert Wars were and still are fought over well ownership, which is strictly held within families. Here in the US there were Range Wars over Water access. Drinkable Water was and still is a priceless commodity in many parts of the World today. Fresh drinkable water is a shrinking resource all over the World. More Judicial use of this water is definitely called for. Only time will tell if we can learn from our past concerning the future regarding water, and it’s scarcity.

A Thirsty Heart must be viewed not with our modern access to clean water, but through Jesus’ eyes. He recognized the value of the imagery when he used water as his symbolism. Water would be seen with the same awe by everyone he spoke with. They too would have seen it as being worth more than Gold.

What is great food without a satisfying drink to match it? Jesus depicted the lessons he shared as a Spring from his mouth. The Verses from the RGoT I’ll share later are my reference material. The concept is magnificent. I also think this is beautiful imagery.

When I envision The Spring from his Mouth, I think of this simple garden fountain. The water is cool, crisp, and clean. It glitters in the light coming from itself. The water bubbles up from it’s unseen depths through a hole in the apex of the rock.

It is not flashy, there are no multiple spouts. It does not vary it’s rate to shoot towards the sky in time to some musical score. The light is bright and comforting. It does not change colors for show. The light is steady, calming, healing and eternal. The water seems to laugh with joy as it races over the edge of the fountains edge.

All who drink here will be satisfied. Any burning Thirst in their throat of fear or doubt will be rinsed away. Their Hearts will be filled. They will Thirst no more. I see the healing that can come from this Thirst being quenched. The water is Jesus’ words. The comfort comes from knowing you are loved. The Healing radiates from the Knowledge that you are a Child of God.

Jesus even asks us to pass the water on to others. We can act in Jesus’ stead to become more like him in our thoughts, actions and words. We can become conduits carrying the water too. We also can become healers, comforters, and sweeping away fear.

Here are the Verses that I’m speaking about. The second one is an excerpt from the Verse 13 because it covers several different subjects. The third Verse is about drinking from a different source, and it’s repercussions.

RGoT Verse 108 Jesus said, “A person who satisfied their thirst from the Spring of my Mouth will become more like me. The things that have been hidden will be Lighted for that person.”

RGoT Verse 13 Jesus acknowledged their answers, “I am all you say and more, but I am not your Master, but a Servant like you will become when you fully know The One. Because you have freely consumed my knowledge, you have become drunk from the bubbling Spring, which I have shared. I share what you can understand at this time.”

RGoT Verse 28 Jesus said, “I came to live in the flesh. I came to live as a Man. I found all people were drunk. I found none of them thirsty. No one was seeking Truth. My Soul cries for the people of Earth. They are blind in their hearts and do not see anything. They came into the World to learn and become better. The Liar and that brood empty them. They have become dissipated, stagnant, and self-satisfied. Light will come again because I will light the way with fire. For the moment they are intoxicated. When they shake off the Wine of this lost life, then they will thirst again in regret.”

This last Verse is a caution about the source of your drinking. Satan has a really tasty wine to share. It is pretty and oh so sparkly. It just radiates Carefree Fun.

It is “Free”, like all the products given away by drug dealers. The price is unseen and often unrecognized because it is paid long after you are a steady customer. You may even support your “habit” by turning into a Dealer yourself.

How many people would you convince to turn their back on God. I’m sure the whispers from Satan would be reassuring. They would tell you there is no use in giving anything away when you can make a profit. Satan will be very obliging in pointing out other Children of God who are “Just not having any fun. Unfortunately the only one who will profit is Satan. They say Misery Loves Company. This is the ultimate Misery.

The Drink of Satan is filled with the selfish quest to get your own piece of the pie. You may think it is just you that gets hurt. You are wrong, indulging every selfish whim always hurts more than you. The World is filled with self-destructive people.

The Wine of Satan is very good at making you forget. Everyone is here to help someone. Everyone is here to learn something, maybe a hand full of things. How would you feel if it came time to “give your report” to God about your lessons; only to have missed out on them. If you were trying to learn a lesson to better yourself in a Spiritual way, did that World Hangover keep you from even “Going to Class”.

The Bubbling Spring of Jesus’ Teachings is my drink of choice. There is nothing like a big glass of cool water to wash away a huge hangover. It is never too late to start going back to class. Having fun does not have to mean excess in whatever your chosen pastime is. Moderation is the key in everything. There are people who will follow your lead if you start showing self-control. I want all of you to be the best you can be, no matter when you start. It’s a clean blackboard, are you ready to go back to school? I have lots to learn too, I’ll meet you there.

God Bless the Whole World, No Exceptions.

Giving Thanks Sermon 11-18-07

With the Holiday of Thanksgiving coming it seemed to call for a summation of our Year, Our Harvest so to speak. There are many things that are the results of our efforts this last year. Some of the things in our life have been gifts from others. Some of our Harvests have been good and some have not been good at all.

In the Northern Hemisphere this is the last Harvest of the Year. All the crops have been gathered. They are being cured to last us through the long Winter to come. The crops that can be dried are sorted and cured so they can stay fresh the rest of the Winter. In times past Winter could be a time of rest and strengthening for the next year.

If our crops fell short of expectations we suffered. We may have met with hardship, making our Grain Silos echo half empty. In these times our rest is disturbed by worry and thoughts of Starvation.

As a Farmer I know the vagaries of growing food. If all goes too well you hope there is a market for the extra. If everyone has too much it usually costs more to ship it away than the price you can receive. When you plant you count on some losses. As a result you add more planting to your assessment to balance the probable losses.

In times where everything goes wrong, there may not be anything to harvest. It is a severe time of belt tightening. You may not have even enough to feed your family let alone sell for cash. Luxuries of store bought are out of your reach.

In good years there is enough for your family plus extra to sell at a reasonable price. These balanced years are wonderful to experience. It makes memories that tide you over when the other two kinds of harvest come in your life.

Agriculture made leisure time possible. When we were nomads there was never a down time to rest. Planning could only be done for the next move. It was never a plan for next year. Agriculture also tied people to one place. It was very hard to pull up your home and walk away from a bad situation. You always dreaded the lean years, but you stuck it out.

I see an interesting trend lately. We are returning to a nomad way of life. Fewer people farm. People move a lot in modern times. Food is generally steady in the developed World. There is always a farmer in a different Hemisphere to grow Bananas when snow covers our ground. The good part is we can leave bad situations much more readily. The bad part is we do not connect in Communities much now.

We have also started looking at plastic wrapped food as food. There are kids that I have met that think they are created that way. They do not know that something died to feed them. Wasting food is very common. How can a child value food when they are fed constantly? I do not advocate starving children. I am just making an observation.

In my life I have talked with many people. Some had never wanted anything that was not within easy reach. Small delays in their want was very hard on them. They felt it was unfair and a great hardship.

I have also met people who had to strive for luxuries. The basics came easily enough to them. They were impatient as well, but seemed to get much more satisfaction from the luxuries when they saved enough to get them.

There have also been people who rarely had enough. A filling meal was a luxury for them. They fell into two distinct groups. The first group were like starved wolves. When the bounty arrived they fought tooth and nail to keep it. They appreciated it on one level only. That they had won it by strength of arms. They often felt a sense of entitlement to the bounty. Thoughts of others never entered the equation.

The second group was just as deprived but for some reason they felt it was a wonderful gift. They savored it. They took their time to share it. They had seen the pit and were just happy to be in the light again. Their appreciation was palpable in their actions.

I have known hunger. It did not keep me from sharing when I could. Those that get what they want too easily are to be pitied. They will never savor anything. Appreciation comes from not having. There is great satisfaction in earning what you want. You will value it more than if it was handed to you on a silver platter. Those that have nothing have the greatest gift of all if they can find the wonder in the bounty they receive.

This lesson goes for life as well. To appreciate God sometimes you have to walk in the Dark a while. The gift of God’s love is free.

At this Holiday you are looking at what lessons you have had this last year. You are sifting through your harvest. All of us have chaff mixed with the grain. In truth we can not really know the extent of our harvest until the winnowing is complete. Until the chafe is gone from the grain it is just a pile of plant material.

Grain has a tough protective covering. It protects the grain from insects and disease. It shelters the grain from moisture extremes. The problem for us is it can not be digested. It has sharp edges. It makes grinding the grain difficult. If left on it can make it very difficult to cook or get nutrition from the grain it encases.

To break the grain loose it has to be flailed. If the grain is not ripe it just mashes. If it is too moist it can not be winnowed until it has dried. When the flailing is complete you have grain that is mixed with the chaff.

Chaff is lighter than the grain. In times past to separate the grain from the chaff you needed a breeze. After the grain is thrashed it was put in a basket. The contents were tossed up, a little out of the basket. When the breeze caught the chaff it would blow away. The grain, being heavier would fall back into the basket. After awhile the only thing left in your basket was edible grain. Then you could pick out the insects and damaged grain that was not good to store.

At this time of year it is important to find the grain among your chaff. These experiences will nourish you through the beginning of the coming year. They must be freed from their covering so that you can see the bounty that is your’s from the past year of hard work. In the end if you do not separate the grain from the chaff you will not know the extent of your harvest.

I urge you to find joy in your harvest no matter the size. Feast upon the bounty of your life no matter how small. By assessing your harvest from this year you can make plans for the coming year. There will be other harvests. If you can share what you have you will be doubly blessed. If you can appreciate both the good and the bad that you have harvested you are well ahead of most people.

If you can embrace the gifts that God has bestowed on you be at peace. By embracing both the good and the bad with rejoicing you are getting the most out of your studies in this life. It is all in your hands.

I wish everyone a joyous harvest. I hope you have good reunions with your friends and family. Be careful if you are traveling. Be thankful for being a Child of God, it is a bounty no one can take from you, but you can share with everyone.

God Bless the Whole World, No Exceptions.

Free Will Sermon 11-25-07

There has been a discussion of Free Will versus Pre-Destiny since Philosophy began. There are many things of course that can influence the choices we make. We may make decisions based on whether it will be good for us personally. For example it might keep us out of danger. It might bring us resources, like food, shelter, money, a relationship, or status.

There is a school of thought that argues that the choices we make are based on the genetics we carry from conception. Half the influence from our Mother and half from our Father. The other side of the argument is that we make choices based on how we were brought up. This discussion is called Nature versus Nurture.

To raise a moral person we have to lead by example. A good, supportive, loving home life makes for good people would be the conclusion of this way of thinking.

We make allowances for people coming from homes that are abusive, and lacking in the basic needs of a child. This child would of course grow up to be short changed in the judgment department. They would not “Know any better”.

If we go with Nature versus Nurture we could say, “My Family has a lot of Hot heads, so I am like that too.” or “ I had a hard Childhood.” The idea of Nature versus Nurture has a bearing on how we behave as well as the choices we make, but there is a missing ingredient. The Court Defense of, “It was not my fault.” has been used a great deal lately in Court Cases to explain away why someone would do something horrible.

We could also dismiss great acts of Altruism too. If we were destined to save the Family of so and so from a burning house, how can we give credit to that Hero. They were just following a program that ordained the act of Valor.

On the other hand in some Christian Theology there is an argument about Free Will versus God‘s Omniscience. The doctrine of Divine foreknowledge seems to be in conflict with Free Will. It simply states that if God knows exactly what will happen there can be no such thing as Free Will. If God knows every choice we make how can we influence the outcome by our choices?

How can we Sin if it is ordained by God’s Knowledge that we will be a Mass Murderer at such and such an age? How can we hold this person accountable for their crimes if it was going to happen no matter how they might not want to do the deed? They had to do it because it was Ordained by God.

In this idea of God setting our paths, there is no flexibility for doing more than our program. This is called Determinism in Philosophy. In this way of looking at our lives and our choices there can be no Free Will. If we are set on a path with no Free Will we could not sin. We would be meat machines who followed our set courses from birth to death.

Martin Luther, the founder of the branch of Christianity called Protestant, was a Determinist. He was convinced that people were totally depraved, destitute of Free Will. Because of original sin he thought that all works were nothing more than an outgrowth of a persons corrupted will. As a result they would be Judged by God to be, in reality, mortal sins. Luther’s Doctrine meant that people could be saved only by Faith. He believed that our faith in Jesus as the Christ made Jesus’ Righteousness our own. It was only through this faith that we are enveloped in the garb of righteousness, that covers our guilt and sinfulness. This Righteousness offsets any defects in our Characters.

Jewish Tradition says that Free Will is a product of the basic human soul. They use the word neshama. The root word for this is n.sh.m. or .נ.ש.מ which means "breath". This refers to the Breath of God giving us our Souls. The ability to make a Free Will choice is Yechida. This is the part of the soul which is united with God. Since God is the only being that is not hindered by or dependent on cause and effect we can share the ability to have Free Will too. Since freedom of will does not belong to the realm of physical reality it is understandable that Free Will can transcend our Life Limitations.

The way we were brought up does not mandate the kind of person we become. There are many people who were raised in Drug or Alcohol abusing Homes. They may be more “At Risk”, but most do not follow that path. There are many who are abused that still become loving partners and parents. There are many people who are born in abject poverty that still rise above their circumstances.

If they do not forget the hardships they might even be the person who sets up an outreach. Maybe because of the Outreach some next generation of kids can look up a bit higher because they now have a positive role model.

Striving to be better is often the motivator. A parent may work three jobs because they want something better for their children. Jumping into the unknown of leaving an abusive relationship because you do not want your kids to be abusers. These are leaps of Faith.

There was recently a story of a Hero. He ran into a burning building of strangers. After going in several times he collapsed with smoke inhalation. He had rescued several kids and a Mom. The News Reporters showed up to document the fire. They were overjoyed with the idea that a Hero was involved. They talked with him for many minutes about what he did. When they asked him why he did it, he just said it was the right thing to do.

When the Human interest story hit the wires it was aired all over the USA. Unfortunately someone recognized him. You see he was wanted on an Arrest Warrant. He risked his freedom to do the right thing. He risked far more than his life when he saved that family. He used Free Will to rise above his former crime. I never heard if he was convicted. I never heard if the circumstances of his arrest were taken into account. In my heart I hope so.

In the Church of Thomas we believe there is a mixture of both Free Will and Pre-Destiny. In a way it offers the best of both ways of thinking. We believe that God knows what will come next. We also believe that people can and should be held accountable for their actions.

We understand that a poor upbringing can warp a child’s sense of right and wrong. We also understand that there are some things that are powerful influences that come from our genetics. Allowances can be made for these influences, however they do not absolve them from wrong doing. Being firm but compassionate answers the needs of both influences.

The way we see it is that our lives are like a great big coloring book. All the outlines Pre-Destiny, are drawn by God. We color in the pictures with our choices by Free Will, as we live each page. By knowing what God wants from us we are better able to color inside the lines. There is a great deal of creativity and variety that can be used to color our pages. None of them are wrong. The object is to color inside of God’s lines the best we can to make it a Good Picture. As we color we get better at figuring out what works best. Happy Coloring!
